In Japan, the Sega Saturn makes it's debut. It launched 6 months later in the U.S. to only four retailers with the price tag of $399. Unfortunatley this surprise move resulted in very few sales.

After it's sucessfull release in Japan, the Playstation Debuted in the U.S during September 1995 with amazing reviews. Sony enjoyed a very successful launch with titles of almost every genre including Toshinden, Twisted Metal, Warhawk, and Ridge Racer. Almost all of Sony's and Namco's launch titles went on to produce numerous sequels.
It was released with only two launch games in Japan and North America (Super Mario 64 and PilotWings 64). However, with a price tag off $199 the N64 did quite well considering it's competitors.

With improved technology, arcades focus on bringing in more simulation games like driving, skiing, snowboarding, and Jet Skiing, as their popularity has surpassed that of shooting and fighting games. The importance of this shift is a result of the increasing variety of the new consumer base. No longer was it only "gamers" who were playing arcade games, instead everyone found these new simulation games fun.
Sega introduces the Dreamcast in Japan. This console operates on Microsoft Windows CE which will allow for easier conversions between Dreamcast and PC games. It has a built-in 56 kbps moden.

The Wal-Mart retail chain decides to ban over 50 video games that it deems inappropriate for minors. Although retail stores are supposed to check for age identification on games rated "mature", Wal-Mart becomes the first of many to ban them out-right.
As a result of the shootings that occurred at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, Sega announces that it will not release a light gun with the Dreamcast in the U.S. In addition, it prevents use of imported guns with American consoles, which forces the Americans to use standard controllers to play the popular games like House of the Dead 2.

The Sony's PlayStation 2 (PS2) launches in the U.S. and is sold out by early morning. Only 500,000 units are available which causes mass shortages around the country. It is the first console to use DVD technology
